RARE Wedgwood Jasperware Black on Cane Cake Plate
In the rare black on cane colorway, this handled Wedgwood plate has the best details. The black outline is so simple but completely striking in contrast to the golden yellow ground. The center features a young Bacchus, son of Jupiter, holding his thyrsus (fennel staff). He was the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility and was often followed by Satyrs. Impressed Wedgwood mark on the base.
Jasperware is a type of stoneware developed in the 1770's which has an unglazed matte or 'biscuit' finish with a contrasting design.
